Letter to the Editor
Use this model "letter to the Editor" for responding quickly to local media reports about graffiti. Just add local information. The letter is aimed at addressing and/or correcting reports about graffiti. It is also a good opportunity to educate about graffiti vandalism and address specific community concerns.
To the Editor:
The recent acts of graffiti vandalism you reported on (name of article and date) are of great concern to (local affiliate/organization name). Spray painting public and private property without permission is an act of vandalism that hurts everyone: businesses, homeowners, schools, and cities.
- Research shows graffiti:
- Contributes to lost revenue associated with reduced ridership on transit systems, reduced retail sales, and declines in property value.
- Results in more graffiti, vandalism, and crime.
- Increases public fears about safety in their community.
(affiliate/organization name) works with schools, businesses, and community groups to help keep our city clean and free of graffiti. Research shows that removing graffiti within 48 hours is one of the most effective ways to deter graffiti. It sends a message that graffiti vandalism will not be tolerated.
(Explain one upcoming activity or aspect of your program related to graffiti prevention, including partners and how the community can get involved).
Please join with (affiliate/organization name) to stop graffiti vandalism. To learn more about the high cost of graffiti, visit www.graffitihurts.org.
